Can a Serious Entrepreneur Be Seriously Broke?

Can a Serious Entrepreneur Be Seriously Broke?

Apparently not, if you listen to the latest “guru speak” I’ve heard on webinars and in sales presentations. (And actually it’s nothing new, it’s just getting to me lately . . .) It seems that if you’re “serious” about your business, you will find a way to sink $1000, $2000, or even $5000 into Joe Guru’s program. His program will work if you do. And if you don’t have enough belief in yourself that you can make the investment back before the credit card bill is due, or in time to pay Uncle John back by next month . . . well that’s just another in a long line of faults you have. One more indicator that you’re a lazy fraud, rather than the serious entrepreneur you claim to be. Without fail, the program creator will have a sympathetic “me too” story for you when you confess to not being able to buy his program. “I know what you’re saying. That was me too when I started out. I was living in my mom’s basement and had to borrow the $2000 to buy my first marketing course . . . (Or I had to spread the payment over three credit cards!) . . .” So it’s up to you. You can “man up” and find the money . . . or continue to disappoint poor little Janie by not having the money to take her to Disney World again this year. By the end of these presentations all the “have-nots” have convinced themselves that maybe robbing a bank is a viable plan for getting their hands on Joe Guru’s...

How to Be an Expert in Your Market

If you want to have a profitable online business, your audience has got to see you are an expert. No one is going to listen to you, trust you, and eventually buy from you if they don’t think of you as an expert in the marketplace. There are two ways you can fail at being an expert. The first is failing to recognize that you are an expert. This is the one I see the most as an online business coach. So many people don’t give themselves the credit they deserve. They fail to recognize and value their life experiences. And they think they have to be a household name with a 7 figure bank account to have “expert” status. The second is failing to recognize you aren’t an expert. This is the one you see most often in your marketplace. Either the “expert” is not practicing what she preaches, or is just giving you theory and possibility rather than practical “how-to” advice. Some of these professed experts are even making money. But it usually doesn’t last long, and never leads to the empire you are looking to build. What you have to figure out if you want to have a profitable business then, is where the “sweet spot” is. How do you recognize and promote your expertise, without getting in over your head? How do you continuously provide value to your audience, when you can think of ten people off the top of your head that know more than you do about your market? A lot of time and effort goes into becoming an expert in your market. A real expert who helps...

How Taking Responsibility Helps You Make Friends and Money

Last week we talked about the importance of taking responsibility in your life, and specifically, in your online business.  It will be worth your 5 minutes to read through that article and honestly evaluate how you are doing when it comes to taking responsibility. Responsibility gives you control over the ultimate outcome of most everything in your business.  Which is nice.  But, what’s even better, is that taking responsibility will help you make friends and money.  And that’s really where the bottom line is in business. Responsibility Will Make You Friends Think about how you feel when you make a mistake.  You feel bad.  And, you want as few people as possible to know about it.  You do what you can to fix it as quickly as possible. When something goes wrong in your business – a mistake, an oversight, a mishandling, whatever – you are the one who needs to take responsibility.  It’s your business. At first look, this may not seem fair or right.  Letting the person who has directly caused the error off the hook encourages him to do an inadequate job in the future, doesn’t  it?  Not if you handle it right. The Small Mistakes Remember the guy from my last article who announced in an email to everyone “my secretary messed up?”  The responsible way to handle something like that – an easy to correct mistake without long-term consequences – is to simply correct it without assigning any blame. Acknowledging the mistake with the person who made it, and taking the steps to correct it (or allowing him to do so if appropriate), is all that’s needed most...

Exposing the Big Lie: Making Money Online is Hard

I can’t decide who I’m more fed up with, those who sell products about making money online, or those who buy products about making money online. I’m tired of hearing how every new product is THE ONE that finally makes it easy for even a newbie to make a living online. There is no product that makes it “easy.” I’m tired of reading product testimonials that say, “by just implementing one technique in this product I increased my sales by $10,000 a month.” These testimonials always come from some guru who was already making $100,000 or more a month. Hardly relevant to the masses who are scraping pennies together to try to learn how to make a living online. I’m tired of hearing Bob’s testimonial that he made $20,000 in a month using this revolutionary new system. When you learn the real story, Bob was either the best friend of the product creator, or he made $20,000 in a month after working the system for a year. Don’t get me wrong, I’d put in a year’s worth of work to reach $20,000 a month. My complaint is that this in not what’s being sold. Copywriters are responding beautifully to the hoards of instant gratification seekers that swarm the internet daily in search of financial freedom. Their sales letters are telling people that they can make 5 figures in thirty days. That they can quit their day jobs in 90 days and bask eternally in financial freedom. The truth is, 99.9% of us, at least, can’t do this. And it’s a lie to represent that there’s any system, course, or Ebook that...

Taking the Right Action: Is the Biggest Guru Your Best Online Mentor?, Part II

Last time we talked about how easy it is to get lost in all the how-to products.  Buying courses about achieving online success can actually prevent you from taking the action you need to really attain internet marketing success. The “anti-gurus” say you shouldn’t buy anything.  You can learn it all for free by searching online.  I doubt this is true.  But, even if it is, no one has the time to do this.  And if you did, your time would be way better spent taking action towards attaining online success rather than reading about it. The best shortcut to online success is an online mentor.  Not a guru.  Not someone who’s made a lot of money online.  But a mentor.  Someone who can lead you step-by-step to internet marketing success.  Your online mentor may be a guru.  But, not all gurus are mentors.  Not everyone who can make money online can teach others how to make money online. How do you find an online mentor?  I’ve spent thousands of dollars figuring this out.  I have discovered definite characteristics that make a great mentor.  Knowing these characteristics will arm you with the information you need to find your mentors, and your eventual online success.  And hopefully, it will save you thousands of wasted dollars and at least that many wasted hours. There are four qualities that my most powerful mentors share.  First, your online mentor will provide personal customer support.  This is an excellent indicator that they care about your online success.  Call your potential mentor’s support number or submit a support ticket.  Ask a question about a product you’re...
