9 Unusual but Achievable Tips to Start Profiting Now with Your Online Business

When I first started out online, I was totally sucked in by those stories of people who made $10,000 in their first thirty days. With a system I could purchase for just $97 today! You would think I would be smarter than that. But hey, if it’s possible that it could happen, isn’t it worth $97? Well, I’ve come a long way over the years. Fortunately. And I realize that the “first 30 days” always means “the first 30 days after they’ve worked at it for 2 or 3 or 10 years!” While it’s not realistic that you’re going to start pulling in 5 figures a month your first month in business, you can get into the profit zone in the first 30 days. But, it’s not necessarily going to be easy. It’s going to require that you do some things that most others aren’t willing to do. Good news is, they are things that you can do. Let’s talk about 9 things you can do to jump-start your online business profits. The “how to” of each of these could be its own article, but I’ll give you enough information here to decide which direction you want to go. Give Stuff Away You’re probably familiar with this concept. You give a free ebook, report, or video in exchange for a person’s email address. Everyone’s doing this to build their list. But it takes time to get those on your email list to actually buy from you. So how do you give stuff away, and profit now? Here are 3 things that work. 1. Telephone Consultation When you are first...

What is Content Curation and Why You Should Care

Content curation is hugely important to your online business. And its importance will only continue to grow. When I talk with people about whether and how they are curating content, I find that many don’t understand how to curate content. And a good number of people don’t even know what content curation means. So today we’re going to start from the beginning and talk about the what and why of content curation. Then next time I’ll share with you some of the easiest and most effective methods of content curation. What is Content Curation? Content curation escapes any exact definition but I’ll give it a try. Content curation is the discovery, selection, organization and sharing of the best and most relevant content on any given topic. The content involved is usually articles, but can (and should) include videos, photos, infographics, and podcasts. Once the content is found, selected and organized, it can be shared in a variety of ways. Most commonly, curators share the content on their blog, in a their email newsletter, on social media networks, and/or in a virtual newspaper-type publication such as Paper.ly or Scoop.it. It is also worth mentioning what content curation is not, as there is a lot of that going on too. Putting someone else’s content on your blog, in whole or in part, without giving the original creator credit, is not curation. It’s stealing. Even publishing someone’s entire article on your site and giving them credit, without their permission, is not okay. Finally, just pulling together a bunch of links and publishing them is not good content curation. The point of content curation...

Does Your Online Business Make You Happy? (It Should!)

I started my online business career in network marketing, representing various direct sales companies. I then became an affiliate marketer and sold products in the hottest niche markets I could find. Both of these options can be a good way to make a living. And in each arena, I found people once in awhile who were passionate about what they were selling. But, much more often than not, I found people who didn’t care what they sold. They just wanted to make money. They had no passion or real interest in their product. Especially when it came to affiliate marketing, there were few who had ever even used the product they were promoting. When I started coaching people on how to build an online business doing affiliate marketing, I always tried to match passion with what my client would be selling. But few people cared. “I’m passionate about whatever makes the most money,” was the prevailing attitude. This was the primary reason I left affiliate marketing. I seemed to be surrounded by a lot of people who wanted to make a lot of money. Very few were making any real money. And even fewer were happy with their online business and what they were doing. After 15 years as a business owner, and lots of experience watching, talking to and learning from other business owners, I remain more convinced than ever that the most important consideration in choosing the market for your online business is that it makes you happy. If you aren’t happy doing what you do, then little else matters. In today’s video, I talk about why...

The Online Business Myth: Turn Your Passion Into Profit

The truth is, you can’t always turn your passion into profit. It’s a catchy little phrase that rolls off the tongue easily. And, it sounds good. Who wouldn’t want to turn a thing you’re passionate about into a profitable online business? But, before you quit your day job and run to the bank to open another account to hold all of that new-found profit, let’s step into reality for a minute. I have a passion for going on fun outings with my kids instead of working. I also have a passion for eating ice cream. I doubt either of these is going to be turned into a very profitable online business. And these may be extreme examples, but the fact is, not every passion can be turned into a profitable online business. The theory that if you follow your heart the money will come, applies only to some people. The people whose heart goes in the direction of a revenue generating cause. So, once you’ve come to grips with the fact that your online business is not always as magical as simply turning your passion into profit, where do you go from there? How do you know if you’ve chosen the right market for your online business? You are going to invest many, many hours into your business, and a lot of money too. The importance of picking a profitable market from the beginning cannot be underestimated. It is no fun to get a year (or more) into it and realize you aren’t making money because there is no money to be made. If you are just starting out, or...

Google+: How to Easily and Effectively Make Quality Connections

Today’s super simple, yet super effective tip for your online business is about making quality connections on Google+. Last week, we talked about the importance of having lots of friends in your Google+ circles.  With Google’s Social Search feature, your chances of showing up in the search results skyrocket if you are in the circles of the person doing the search. So, it could be of great SEO benefit to be in lots of people’s circles.  IF those people are searching for the things that you are writing and posting about. If your connections are searching for “best low-fat diets,” and you are posting about “how to hand-dye yarn,” you obviously won’t be showing up in their search results.  No matter how many circles they have you in. Instead of going on a willy-nilly circling spree, it is best then to target who you circle.  This strategy also makes sense because people are more likely to circle you back if they see you have some common ground. The best tool for helping you find targeted Google+ connections for your online business is FindPeopleonPlus.  I will make a detailed video for you tomorrow about how to use this site. 3 Ways to Use FindPeopleonPlus You can get started on your own by doing 3 simple things. 1.  Add Yourself to the Directory In the upper left hand corner of the home page you will see where it says “Add/Update me to directory,” like this: Click there to connect your Google+ account to FindPeopleonPlus.  You will be allowed to add 3 tags (basically keywords) so that when others in your market are...

3 Tips for Choosing the Right Market for Your Online Business

When I was looking to start my first online business, I remember reading a lot about how I could turn my “passion into profit.”  And that if I would just “follow my passion, the money would come.” These are catchy little phrases that sound very nice, but I’ve long since learned that they are not a wise or solid basis for starting an online business. While choosing the right market is not as easy as identifying your passion, making the decision based solely on where you think the best money is won’t be the best move for your long-term success either. When you decide to start an online business, choosing the right market is like choosing your college major.  “What do you want to do for the rest of your life?” is an important decision that’s not to be made lightly. You can certainly decide to change your online business down the road, just like you can change careers after you get your college degree, but the goal is to get you into a profitable business now.  Then, if you choose to change your business it’s because you want to, not because lack of profit is forcing you to. When choosing where you’ll be doing business, there are two big considerations.  First, what market am I interested in and qualified to start a business in?  And second, what market can I make money in? We are going to focus on the first question today. There are 3 questions you should ask yourself that will give great ideas for where you should start your online business. 1.  Do you have...
