One Simple Reframe to Make Your Business More Fun and More Money

One Simple Reframe to Make Your Business More Fun and More Money

Most people want to help other people. This applies especially to entrepreneurs. In everyday life, we humans go out of our way to help people. We hold doors, pick up dropped items, lend change to the person in front of us who’s short. We help a stranded motorist, Cook meals for a sick neighbor, Attend fundraisers for a community member dealing with tragedy. . . My family has season passes to Six Flags. Several times a season they have “bring a friend for free” day, which means we have four free passes, each worth a minimum $45. We rarely bring four friends, which means I get to troll the line asking people if they’d like to be my free guest. And I do this without hesitation. It’s the gift I’m committed to giving someone. The human instinct to help. When Helping Becomes Selling I’ll confess that in the past I’ve been much less enthusiastic about offering my coaching or consulting services to people. When I think about how differently I approach potential paying clients than I do potential free guests at Six Flags, it almost makes me laugh. Take a pause for a moment here, because this is worth your time. Think about how enthusiastically and freely you offer to help your fellow humans in everyday life. Compare it to how you approach potential clients. If you think it’s an apple to oranges comparison, don’t go away. I did too, at first. But I was wrong (as are you). 🙂 And I can tell you that since I recently started viewing every potential client as a Six Flags free...

How to Simplify Your Business Growth in One Step

When you think of “business growth,” you likely think numbers. But that’s a mistake. Because once you start focusing on your numbers ~ needing more followers, more views, a bigger list ~ you loosen your requirements for admission into your audience. It no longer matters whether the people who join you are on the same mission as you, and are looking for the outcome you offer. What matters is how many people opted in to your list today. How many Twitter followers you have. How many YouTube views you got. And while you certainly need someone to be listening, your focus should always be on who’s listening, not how many are listening. I hope you’ll take a few minutes to watch the video, because I think it will help you put this strategy into use in your business. It really will simplify and accelerate your business growth. But, if you’re really in a hurry . . . Here’s the “Skimmer’s Version” for Simplifying Your Business Growth I’m sharing this with you because I recently “got it” myself and it’s making a huge difference in my business growth and in how happy I am with my clients and my entire audience. First, make sure your messaging is clear. What do you stand for? What are you against? Don’t be afraid to offend people, alienate people, push people away. You will get resistance from people. This truly is the first sign that you are doing things right. Wish these people well and tell them to go away. Don’t argue with them. Don’t try to convert them. If we all resonated with the same thing, there would only be one...
Death Row, Online Marketing and My Journey to Change the World

Death Row, Online Marketing and My Journey to Change the World

Prequel The perception is that you’ll find the worst of the worst humans on death row. That they are a scary bunch of men, or maybe even “animals,” that you and I would never have a single thing in common with.  And maybe you won’t believe me when I tell you that nothing could be further from the truth. That you could learn more about life and success and failure from many death row inmates than you will from 4 or 6 or even 12 years of higher education. But it’s fact. (You might find an interesting tidbit of support for the fact in this article about prison inmates beating the Harvard debate team!) Anyway  . . . what’s that got to do with online marketing, and changing the world? You’ll see in a minute. Stick with me. For 25 years I was a criminal defense attorney. Not the kind you see on TV, where the actors choose the cases they take, and free the wrongfully accused after 60 action-packed minutes. And not the “real” attorneys you see on the TV news, who wrangle the multi-million dollar athletes’ murder charges down to traffic violations.  I worked for the poor. Appointed to represent those who couldn’t pay, but were facing jail time. Fresh out of law school, it started with drunk driving and suspended license charges. Within seven years, I had devoted my practice to representing those charged with crimes carrying the death penalty, who didn’t have the 100K+ it took to defend against such charges (or even $100 without the “K” in most cases).  Ten different times throughout my...

How to Make More Money with Your Black Friday (or Cyber Monday) Special

At the risk of being heavily “booed,” I admit to loving Black Friday. I know there is more and more resistance to the commercialization of a holiday that is suppose to be reflective of gratitude for what you have, rather than a race to acquire more of it. And I get that. In fact, until 3 years ago I thought Black Friday shoppers were crazy. No price was worth arriving at 3:00 a.m. and standing in the cold, hoping to get the magic number needed to score the $100 computer. I slept peacefully while others endured that madness. And then one year my 12-year-old niece wanted to get in on some midnight shopping. Naturally, I agreed to go. Not because the whole store was 50% off. Not because I could get a 50″ flat screen TV for $200. And not even because the first 500 people in line got a chance to win a million dollars. I started my Black Friday shopping tradition because it made me feel good. And I keep going every year because it makes me feel good. The second year, my eight-year-old daughter joined us. This year, three generations of my family ~ my mom, me, my daughter, and my niece ~ intend to continue the tradition. And I have to tell you, I have no idea who will be offering the best deals. Nor do I care. Deciding Where to Spend Your Money So what stores will we hit on Black Friday? The ones we like. The ones we recognize. The ones that have given us value in the past. It doesn’t matter if...

How My $53,000 Online Business Education Saves You Time and Money

Here’s the thing I wish I had known when I started my first online business in 1997. Well, it’s actually one of several things that would have saved me many years and much money. But, it’s probably the biggest thing. There is not a product, service, or piece of software out there that is going to make you $10,000 in your first 30 days. And it’s not even so much about me. Because this is also the biggest mistake I’ve seen friends, colleagues, and clients make over the years. Your enthusiasm for learning when you first start your online business is admirable. I felt completely unstoppable, and was committed to do anything to make this “internet thing” work. And that’s where the expert copywriters come in. They seize upon your naive optimism and late-night “how to make money online” Google searches. And they promise you the moon. What I find most interesting about this is that you don’t have to be a “sucker” to get sucked into these sales letters. For example, we all know better than to believe the advertising we hear on TV. I can’t count the number of times my kids have come to me during a commercial, and with genuine excitement in their voices, told me about the latest product that is going to be life-changing. Most recently, the cup you shake for 2 minutes that magically produces a Smoothie King-quality drink without the time, effort or expense. Sorry, I’m just not buying it (literally!). The Psychology Behind All the “Buying” But I did buy hundreds, and thousands, of dollars worth of products and services...

Web Page Design Outsourcing You Can Afford

Would it help your business to have a web designer at your infinite disposal? Someone to create all of your opt-in/landing pages, thank you pages, sales pages . . . any page you might need to run your online business? This is the kind of outsourcing that takes up 5 figures in a successful online marketer’s annual budget. Not the kind of thing most of us can afford, yet. The catch-22 of it is that if you want to be able to afford a 5-figure web designer, you’ll first need the pages she would design for you to grow your business to that level! Enter Ten Minute Pages. I’m going to do a rare thing today, and promote a product that I’m an affiliate for. I hesitated a few days before deciding to do this. But ultimately, I realized that I use this product to make my business easier, better, and more cost-efficient. It would therefore be a disservice not to tell you about it. (And if you hate the whole affiliate thing, just buy it straight from the site rather than through my link. I want the credit for turning you on to the product more than I want the commission.) I’m not going to spend a lot of time telling you the specifics of Ten Minute Pages. That’s what the sales page is for. There are three packages, including payment plans for the higher-priced packages. Money is no excuse here. This product will save you money, and make you money, at the same time. Before you check out the sales page, let me tell you why...
