The ABC’s of Online Business Profits: Part 2

Have you ever bought a “how to make money online” product?  Remember the excitement you felt as you were downloading the product?  Before you even read the introduction, were you thinking: “This is finally it!  No more day job, no more worries about the bills, I’m finally going to get rich doing what I love!” Within a week – tops – most of us are already looking for the “next” product that’s going to work the magic for us.  And put us on a path to the life of our dreams. What you have, or will, learn from experience is that there is no Ebook, homestudy course, or video training that will give you a profitable online business.  Not even an expensive live event or one-on-one coaching can do it. As I told you last week, having a blueprint for how to build a profitable online business is just one of six factors that all successful entrepreneurs have implemented. Growing a profitable business takes so much more than just getting the mechanics down.  It requires that you get your mind right.  It requires that you get your daily habits right too. In fact, 99% of those who I see give up in failure are missing pieces that have nothing to do with setting up their website right.  Or developing the right product.  Or creating the right sales copy. It’s the other things – the things we often dismiss as easy or unimportant – that most people don’t get right.  In fact, most people don’t even “get it” that these are the difference makers. Lucky for you, I’ve been there.  And...

The ABC’s of Online Business Profits: Part One

The secret to having a successful online business probably isn’t what you think it is.  And I know the word “secret” is grossly overused in the world of online marketing. But I do believe that there is a secret to building a successful online business.  Not because there’s some hidden away trick that very few people know about.  But because very few people are willing to accept the truth. The most popular articles I write tell people how to do something tangible in their business.  How to get more blog readers.  How to use Twitter better.  How to improve your SEO efforts. Obviously, all of these things are important to your online business.  But people fail to make profits for reasons that have nothing to do with the mechanics of “how to” do specific tasks in their online business. Because the “how to” is but a small part of success.  Unfortunately, most people fail to see the forest for the trees. Setting up your profile on every social media site there is won’t make you a success.  Neither will installing the coolest theme ever on your website.  Or buying every $1997 product that’s launched by the internet marketing gurus. So, you can go off and do those things.  And when you’re still struggling to see profits, come back and take a look at how you are doing in the areas we’re talking about today. I didn’t sit down to create the ABC’s of online business profits.  They evolved over time, and experience.  My own experience, as well as the experience of my friends and clients.  When I decided to...

3 Ways to Brand Your Online Business for Maximum Profits

When I was in graduate school, all of the big firms used to come to the school to interview the top 25-33% of the class.  During the two weeks of interviewing, everyone walked around in their dark suits.  The men sported red “power ties” to go along with their uniform. It was literally hard to tell each other apart.  We looked like a boarding school with a strict dress code. And you wouldn’t dare show up in something different in an effort to be unique.  The firms wanted the students who came out of the cookie cutters looking the best. Oh my how things have changed.  When I graduated, my school boasted an 90+% rate of employment for graduates.  Now the employment rate is at a 15 year all time low, hovering around 66%. Many – if not most – professions are facing similar struggles with meeting the demand for jobs. Online business owners face a similar fate.  It used to be fairly easy to throw up a website, drive some traffic to it, and sell an affiliate product to thousands of hungry buyers. Now the profitable online business markets are becoming very crowded.  The money is no longer there for the taking. So, whether you’re looking for a job, or building an online business, the rules for success have changed. It’s time to throw the dark suit and red tie away.  Or at least, to add to it with a pair of lavender snake skin boots and a matching streak of dye in your hair.  It’s time to brand yourself.  To be unique.  To make people recognize and remember...

Your Online Business and the Art of Achieving Washboard Abs

If you’ve ever decided to start an exercise plan to get rid of that extra belly fat that seemed to appear overnight, you know it takes more than one week at the gym to produce the ideal abs. But it’s also true that if you keep at it, with the right combination of exercise and healthy eating, the extra fat will disappear. Did you know, however, that there is a wrong way to work your abs?  And that if you do it wrong, you can actually end up with abs that stick out, rather than get smaller? Well, if you embark on your new exercise program without any guidance, you may end up doing it wrong.  But if you walk into your local gym, the trainer or class instructor is going to tell you how to do it right.  And monitor your progress to make sure you are doing it right and getting closer to your goal. Your trainer at the gym is an expert.  Someone who’s studied how the body works and maybe even someone who has his own story of weight loss or muscle toning. But how is your online business like your belly fat? Consulting with an expert to help you reach your goals is something you do every day.  Whether it’s as informal as taking an exercise class at the gym, or a sewing class at the fabric store; or the more intentional act of going to the doctor to get healthy, or seeking out an accountant’s advice on how to handle your money. Most of us routinely consult with experts and rely on their...

10 Ways Your Online Business Should Grow by Inches

I arrived at the gym the other day really needing my morning workout.  Imagine how thrilled I was to find that I only had one shoe.  This happens occasionally when you have little ones that like to rifle through your gym bag looking for their mislaid toys. As always, it’s great to have friends.  I was quickly into a borrowed pair of shoes, and because I have small feet I was feeling grateful that they were only one size bigger than my shoes. As class progressed, I noticed that my foot was frequently brushing the edge of my aerobic step as I was moving over and around it. I’ve been told that the difference in one shoe size is only 1/3 of an inch.  I was a little surprised that my feet were so precisely trained to know exactly where to step on and off my bench.  Less than an inch was making a noticeable difference. But then it occurred to me that much of life is measured in inches. One of my favorites from Jim Rohn is his formula for success, which is “a few simple disciplines practiced every day.”  Likewise, failure results from “a few errors in judgment repeated every day.” Running a successful online business doesn’t happen overnight, as the result of one defining moment.  It’s a matter of moving an inch every day.  Small consistent steps. There are probably a thousand steps to a profitable online business, but that’s okay.  They’re all a matter of inches.  They’re all things you can do. Today I want to add 10 inches to your online business.  Each is...

3 Tips for Choosing the Right Market for Your Online Business

When I was looking to start my first online business, I remember reading a lot about how I could turn my “passion into profit.”  And that if I would just “follow my passion, the money would come.” These are catchy little phrases that sound very nice, but I’ve long since learned that they are not a wise or solid basis for starting an online business. While choosing the right market is not as easy as identifying your passion, making the decision based solely on where you think the best money is won’t be the best move for your long-term success either. When you decide to start an online business, choosing the right market is like choosing your college major.  “What do you want to do for the rest of your life?” is an important decision that’s not to be made lightly. You can certainly decide to change your online business down the road, just like you can change careers after you get your college degree, but the goal is to get you into a profitable business now.  Then, if you choose to change your business it’s because you want to, not because lack of profit is forcing you to. When choosing where you’ll be doing business, there are two big considerations.  First, what market am I interested in and qualified to start a business in?  And second, what market can I make money in? We are going to focus on the first question today. There are 3 questions you should ask yourself that will give great ideas for where you should start your online business. 1.  Do you have...
