One Simple Reframe to Make Your Business More Fun and More Money

One Simple Reframe to Make Your Business More Fun and More Money

Most people want to help other people. This applies especially to entrepreneurs. In everyday life, we humans go out of our way to help people. We hold doors, pick up dropped items, lend change to the person in front of us who’s short. We help a stranded motorist, Cook meals for a sick neighbor, Attend fundraisers for a community member dealing with tragedy. . . My family has season passes to Six Flags. Several times a season they have “bring a friend for free” day, which means we have four free passes, each worth a minimum $45. We rarely bring four friends, which means I get to troll the line asking people if they’d like to be my free guest. And I do this without hesitation. It’s the gift I’m committed to giving someone. The human instinct to help. When Helping Becomes Selling I’ll confess that in the past I’ve been much less enthusiastic about offering my coaching or consulting services to people. When I think about how differently I approach potential paying clients than I do potential free guests at Six Flags, it almost makes me laugh. Take a pause for a moment here, because this is worth your time. Think about how enthusiastically and freely you offer to help your fellow humans in everyday life. Compare it to how you approach potential clients. If you think it’s an apple to oranges comparison, don’t go away. I did too, at first. But I was wrong (as are you). ūüôā And I can tell you that since I recently started viewing every potential client as a Six Flags free...
5 Reasons You’ll Fail in 2014

5 Reasons You’ll Fail in 2014

Happy New Year! I know you want to change some things this year. Probably a lot of things. Hopefully you’re concentrating on how and why you’re going to¬†succeed, not¬†fail. And while that’s usually what I like to talk about too, as 2014 arrives I find myself frustrated for you. Frustrated because every year everyone vows to make these hugely wonderful changes that are going to make the new year the best ever. And yet by February, at the latest, more than 50% of us have lost that list of things we were going to do to become a picture of success in our business, and our life. Look back for a minute at your 2013. Are you where you wanted to be when you set your vision for the year on January 1, 2013? Probably not. Today is the time to make sure 2014 doesn’t suffer the same fate. Which means that you’ve got to do something different. Most people vow to work harder so they can reach their goals, but that’s never what it’s about. If you want different results, you’ve got to stop trying the same old things that haven’t worked. Here are the biggest 5 failure factors I see. 1. Your Goals are Too Big, Too Many, and Too Vague If you’re setting goals and consistently not reaching them, then you’re doing the goal-setting process wrong. And I’m not going to offer you some new fancy pants system guaranteed to help you finally reach your goals. Such a thing does not exist. Here’s one thing I know about goal-setting — there are a thousand “best” ways...

What if Your Online Business Cost $170,000?

The joys of an online business are abundant. You are your own boss. You set your own hours. And, you can be “in business” after spending very little money on start-up costs. These same facts that make online business ownership great, are also responsible for a lot of online business failures. Because they make your online business feel a lot like a hobby. After all, you are doing something you love. And in the beginning anyway, you are getting paid little to nothing for it. Isn’t that the definition of “hobby?” During the last week, we’ve been talking about ways that your online business should mirror a more traditional offline business. You can read about how to schedule your business, and how to connect with others to build your business if you missed those articles. Today we shift from physical steps you need to take to build a profitable online business, and look at the mindset that’s required to have a successful business. Mindset ~ love it, or hate it . . . I know people either love mindset talk, or hate it. You should love it, because your mindset determines what actions you take and how you take them. And your actions determine your success. The mindset problem stems from the fact that your online business does¬†resemble a hobby more than a business in its early stages. And this fact makes it hard for most people to ever get out of the early stages of their business. Shifting your mindset to that of an offline business owner is, for most people, more important than any of the factors...

Can Your Business Success be Guaranteed?

The bad news, I suppose, is that even the best product or the biggest guru can’t guarantee your business success. The good news, fortunately, is that you¬†can guarantee your business success. That’s right, it’s all up to you. Which is cool, because it means you can’t fail unless you¬†make the choice to. One of the biggest keys to building a profitable business is taking responsibility. Not just usually, or when it’s deserved, or when things go right. But always. ¬†This isn’t something that people think about a lot. But taking 100% responsibility, 100% of the time, is perhaps the best way to guarantee your business success. Here’s a Bad Example of Taking Responsibility The leader of a group I’m part of had organized a business happy hour for the group. It was scheduled for a restaurant that has two locations in the city. Yesterday I got an email from him that said, “My secretary messed up. The happy hour is really scheduled for location B, not location A.” Classic failure to take responsibility. As the leader, it’s his responsibility to get us the right information. Several scenarios may be going through your head right now that are making you say, “but what if it really was her fault?” What if he did everything right and she was distracted by the phone, or forgot, or wrote it down wrong, or a thousand other things? It doesn’t matter. It’s still his responsibility. And it would have been so easy for him to take the appropriate responsibility. There was zero need to say “my secretary messed up.” ¬†Zero. Wouldn’t “sorry for the...

3 Positive Energy Boosters for Your Online Business Profits

I’m enjoying a fun Spring Break week with my kids.¬† We drove to a nice little resort just a couple of hours from our home, and are spending a few days surrounded by nature. I’ve always liked this place.¬† But this visit is the first time I’ve been aware of the completely peaceful energy that the place thrives on.¬† Which surprises me a little, because I’m a big fan of energy. I know what some of you are thinking.¬† Is this going to be one of those “new age-y” articles about positive energy? ¬†I know you can’t see energy.¬† And I know you want concrete strategies about how to build a profitable online business.¬† Not some mumbo jumbo about sitting on a mountain in quiet meditation until it starts raining money on you. I also know that many of the biggest reasons people fail at building a profitable online business have nothing to do with the “nuts and bolts” of business building.¬† And everything to do with their mindset, and the mindset of the people around them. So yes, we are going to talk about positive energy today.¬† At the same time, I’m going to give you 3 solid strategies for building a profitable online business. You likely recognize that there’s a lot of negative energy around your online business efforts.¬† Few, if any, of the people in your life think you can do it.¬† Why don’t you just get a “real job?” And if you’ve turned to online groups for support, there’s a lot of negative energy there too. ¬†Really. Not that the people aren’t well-meaning and supportive.¬†...

Affirmations, Visualizations and Other Kooky Stuff

My 3-year-old is trying to learn how to button his shirt.¬† When he’s having “one of those days,” he’ll whine “I can’t do it,” as he half-heartedly fumbles with the buttons.¬† To encourage him, the rest of us will start chanting “I think I can” a la The Little Engine That Could ~ one of our favorite books. His success rate when we can get him to join in with “I think I can,” is – not surprisingly – much higher. In my experience, this simple example with my son has a lot to do with success in your online business. I know a lot of people disagree with this notion.¬† Certainly I’m not suggesting that sitting on your couch chanting “I think I can” will make your online business successful? Well, no.¬† But I am saying that using positive affirmations throughout your day, and taking quiet moments to visualize your life as if it were exactly the way you want it to be, are crucial components to your success. These “new age,” eyebrow-raising techniques got a bad name around the time the book/movie The Secret was such a popular phenomenon.¬† Many people thought The Secret suggested that you could get anything you wanted in life by laying on the couch and wishing that it would come to you. Obviously, closing your eyes and seeing yourself as a millionaire while you repeat over and over “I own a successful online business,” is not going to do anything to grow your email list or your bank balance. Or is it? I just told you that affirmations and visualizations are a...
